Abstract

This article examines Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poem “Aaj Bazaar Mein Pabjolaan Chalo” as a distinctive example of prison poetry that transforms external oppression into a profound internal and collective experience. The study argues that Faiz does not merely document the external realities of imprisonment, humiliation, and public spectacle; rather, he internalizes these conditions and reshapes them into an expression of inner dignity, moral authority, and conscious resistance. Through a nuanced poetic strategy, the poem moves beyond lamentation or complaint to articulate a subdued yet powerful form of ethical and symbolic defiance. By elevating personal suffering into a representation of collective consciousness, Faiz transcends the conventional boundaries of prison literature and achieves a synthesis of intellectual depth and aesthetic refinement.
