Bedil Haidri (1924 -2004) is a renowned figure of modern Urdu
ghazals. He wrote versatile poetry in terms of themes and tones. In
particular, the indignity of the life of a common man, poverty, social
ups and downs, children facing social insecurity, the violation of
ethical lines of human life and injustice are the main themes of his
ghazal. Bedil Haideri hails from Kabirwala, a small town in Punjab.
Due to his distance from major literary centers like Lahore and
Karachi, he did not get the fame and status he deserved in the world
of Urdu ghazal. Bedil's poetry reflects his humble and impoverished
life as well as the social attitudes of his time. In this research article, a
thematic review of Bedil's ghazal with various poetic examples has
been presented.
