Urdu Ki Lisaniati Tashkeel Main Jan Gilchrist Ka Kirdar

Abstract

Language, grammar, semantics and translation are closely
associated with each other. Orientalists' achievements in Urdu
language and linguistics are commendable. While living in Subcontinent John Gilchrist was inspired by oriental languages. He
played a critical role in the cultural, sociological and linguistics
formation of the Sub-continent. His first dictionary ''A Dictionary,
English and Hindustani'' was published in 1795. The motivating
factor for Gilchrist's contribution to Urdu linguistics was his love for
Urdu.
