Abstract

The eighteenth century proved to be a milestone in the
evolution of the Urdu Language in South Asia. A prominent figure in
this regard is that of Ali Ibrahim Khan, a poet, author and historian.
He was bestowed with numerous titles and estate by the Mughal
emperor Shah Alam. He initially joined the East India Company
where he was much appreciated by Warren Hastings. First, he was
appointed as the Chief Magistrate and later the governor of Benares
by East India Company. He served in this position till his death. He
also pursued his literary interests alongside the administrative affairs.
Nine of his writings are easily accessible. “On the Trial by Ordeal
among Hindus” appeared in the magazine Asiatic Researches
published by Asiatic Society Bengal. It was initially written in
Persian and later translated to English by Warren Hastings. It covers
the various methods of “testing the truth” and calling upon God for
assistance, that the Hindus believe in.
