Literary Historiography of Dr. Tabassum Kashmiri

Abstract

Dr. Tabassum Kashmiri is one of the renowned historians of Urdu.
Although he wrote criticism and creative writings also but
historiography has always been a leading reference to his identity. Dr.
Tabassum Kashmiri"s book "Urdu Adab Ki Tareekh: Ibtda Sey 1857
Tak" was published in 2003. In that work, he not only wrote a
comprehensive history of Urdu Literature till 1857 but also presented
a unique concept of literary historiography in Urdu. In his view,
history, research and criticism should be looked at separately and
while reading may be differentiated easily by any reader. The element
of research and criticism should not be so prevalent in it that the
historical flow is affected. In this article, an attempt has been made to
highlight the important aspects of literary historiography in the light
of the views expressed by Dr. Tasbam Kashmiri in various references
on historiography from the said work.
