Abstract

Kaleemuddin Ahmad as an Urdu Dastani Critic

Professor Kaleemuddin Ahmad is that earlier critic of Dastani literature who wrote in detail about the rules and techniques of Dastani literature in "Urdu ZabanAur Fan-e-DastanGoi". His radical-critical thoughts introduced Dastani literature to the new layers of meaning. His critique on Dastani literature is a beautiful blend of Western wisdom and love for Eastern traditions. He has made a comparative study of East's Dastani traditions with Western literature. Kaleemuddin Ahmad was a practical critic as he not only devised rules for criticism of Dastani literature; but also explained and interpreted those rules in the perspective of Urdu and English Dastani literature. He substantialized that Urdu Dastan encompasses a vast reservoir of allusions and metaphors which can be used to introduce our modern fiction to the new horizons. Majority of Urdu Dastani literature's critics have followed his rules. This article intends to highlight different aspects of Professor Kaleemuddin Ahmad's Dastani critique.
