Abstract

Film critics and researchers agree that films have a stronger affinity with fiction. According to 1992 statistics, 85 percent of all Oscar-winning best pictures are adaptations. From the birth of cinema to now, worldwide filmmakers inspired by fiction and tend to use Novels and short stories on screen. They incline to use fiction as source material because fiction is an attraction for people. Fiction presents ready-made material as well as pre-tested stories and characters. It is fiction that has made the cinema stand on its feet, therefore we must heed the role of fiction in the revival and promotion of the cinema. Fiction has always been an excellent inspiration for cinema all over the world. In Pakistan, novels and short stories are re-created on the silver screen several times. There is an excellent contribution of Fiction to the revival of cinema. As History points out that it was stories of fiction that were used to develop masterpieces in the film industry some of the examples are Mummy, Permasher Singh, Jhumkay, Gandasa, Licence, Gharnata, Ek Chadar Maili Si, Umrao Jan Ada, Akhri Chatan, Sapno ki rah guzar and many more. The basic structural units of fiction are commonly replicated in movies. These are a few samples of what literature brought to cinema. The influence of fiction on cinema is therefore undeniable. Hence, it will not be wrong to tell that fiction-initiated person to move on to the cinema. Today fiction-to-cinema adaptation is a rhetorically and aesthetically autonomous product that shows its creator's unique perspective.
