Abstract

Khawaja Dill Muhammad's didactic poetry is replete with themes that mainly deal with moral aspects of life. The role of human beings in creating an ideal society where fair values and ethical perspectives rule the roost, is recurrent theme in Dill Muhammad's poetry especially his quatrains (Rubaiyyat). These quatrains are in perfect harmony with his times yet in continuation with excellent tradition of quatrain writing in Urdu and Persian classical poetry. Dill Muhammad's quatrains are an amalgamation of the ancient and the modern themes used in quatrains in general. The recurrent themes of his quatrains are those universal values which have always been considered as indispensable. These intrinsic values are truthfulness, honesty, compassion, kindness etc. This paper aims at highlighting these aspects of his quatrains with special reference to the collection of his quatrains titled “Sadd Para-e-Dill”.
